Pollen, Lovebugs, Sap and Sun in Summerville and What They Do to Car Paint

Four things wear down car paint here, and each has its own season. Here’s when they show up, how fast they do harm and the cheapest way to stop each one.

Short answer

Pine pollen coats cars from late March through April. Lovebugs swarm around May and September. Pine sap drips most of the year, and summer sun with highs near 91°F bakes all of it into the clear coat. None of them ruin paint in a day, but each one leaves a lasting mark if it sits for a week.

Key points
  • Rinse pollen off before you touch it. Wiping it dry is what scratches.
  • Wash lovebugs off within a day or so. Their remains are acidic.
  • Soften sap with a remover. Never scrape it.
  • Keep wax, sealant or a coating on the paint all year. It buys you time with all four.

Does Pine Pollen Damage Car Paint?

Pine pollen doesn’t do much damage to car paint by itself. The damage comes from how people remove it. Pollen grains are gritty, and wiping a dry yellow hood with a towel drags them across the clear coat. Once dew or rain wets the pollen, it turns into a sticky film that holds dirt. Rinse first, then wash.

Clemson’s Home and Garden Information Center puts pine pollen season from late March through April. It also explains why your car turns yellow even if you have no pines in the yard. Each grain has two tiny air bladders that help it float, so it travels a long way on the wind. Flowertown Festival weekend in Azalea Park usually lands right in the middle of it.

When Is Lovebug Season in Summerville?

Lovebug season in Summerville comes twice a year. Clemson Extension says major flights come around May and September and last about four weeks each. Lovebugs don’t bite or sting, but their body fluids are acidic. Clemson’s advice is to remove splattered lovebugs within a day or so to prevent permanent paint damage.

University of Florida experts say the same thing about heat. The longer the remains bake in the sun, the more they etch. Two things help a lot. A coat of wax or sealant keeps them from sticking as hard, and soaking them with water for a few minutes before washing lets them slide off instead of being scrubbed off.

How Do You Get Pine Sap Off Car Paint?

To get pine sap off car paint, soften it and don’t scrape it. Hold a towel wet with sap remover or rubbing alcohol on the spot for a minute, then wipe gently. Fresh sap comes off clean. Sap that has baked for weeks turns hard and can leave a dull spot that needs clay or light polishing.

Summerville calls itself Flowertown in the Pines, so sap is a year round problem here, and worst for cars parked under trees in Knightsville, Pine Forest and the older streets near Hutchinson Square. If you can’t move the car, a sealant or coating makes sap much easier to remove.

What Does the Summer Sun Do to Car Paint?

The summer sun dries out the clear coat and bakes in whatever is sitting on it. Climate averages put July highs here at 91°F, and a dark hood in full sun gets far hotter than the air. Over years, that heat and UV turn glossy paint dull and chalky, which is called oxidation.

Summer storms add water spots. Summerville CPW’s water report lists town water as soft, around 23 ppm hardness, but it still carries about 239 ppm of dissolved solids. When sprinkler water or a rinse dries on a hot panel, those minerals stay behind. June through September each bring more than 5 inches of rain, so cars get wet and sun dried again and again.

What Else Falls on Cars Here?

Two smaller things catch Summerville drivers off guard, and both come from trees people plant on purpose.

What Is the Sticky Film Under Crepe Myrtles?

It’s honeydew from aphids. Clemson’s Home and Garden Information Center says honeydew from crepe myrtle aphids can stick to cars and patio furniture, and that black sooty mold grows on it. It builds from late spring through summer. Wash it off within a week, before the sun bakes it into a dark crust.

Do Live Oak Leaves Hurt Paint?

Mostly by sitting wet. Clemson notes that live oaks keep their leaves all winter and drop them as new leaves come in each spring, right when pollen is falling too. Wet leaves packed at the base of the windshield hold moisture, can leave brown tannin marks on light paint and block the drains. Brush them off dry and clear that area by hand.

A Simple Year Plan for Summerville Paint

  1. Early March. Put a fresh sealant on before pollen starts, so it rinses off easier.
  2. Early May. Book a full detail once the yellow is gone. This clears pollen out of every seam.
  3. May and September. Wash bugs off within a day or so during the flights.
  4. June to August. Wash in the morning or in shade, and dry by hand.
  5. October. Cooler days and no pollen make fall a good time for paint correction and a ceramic coating.

A careful hand car wash every two to three weeks handles most of this. If the paint already looks dull or spotted, paint correction and ceramic coating can bring it back and protect it for years.
